From the widely agreed flop of the
Da Vinci Code in 2006 to the more recent success of Pixar’s
UP, the opening slot in the Cannes Film Festival itinerary has had its up’s and downs, no pun intended. The question on the lips of those anticipating the start of the Cannes Film Festival 2011 is who will the selectors give the nod to this year?
Will it be a case of national pride that sees Woody Allen’s
Midnight in Paris pip the rest to open the Festival? A film that sees France’s very own first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy appear, if only briefly.
In recent years Allen’s offerings to the public have been hit and miss. From the highs of his top grossing film,
Vicky Christina Barcelona to the lows with the critical reviews of
Cassandra’s Dream and
Whatever Works. All this feels a long way from Allen’s great works such as
Annie Hall, Manhattan and
Match Point. Critics are however optimistic with the new film which stars Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Michael Sheen.
Of the British contingent, Scottish born Lynne Ramsey is hotly tipped to be amongst the mix closing in for the coveted Palm d’Or award. Her adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s bestselling novel
We Need to Talk about Kevin is being eagerly anticipated by film enthusiasts.

Other notable filmmakers vying for the top accolade are Padro Almodover with
The Skin I Live In. Nicolas Winding Refn, the Dardenne brothers and Terrence Malick with his film
The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn playing father and son.
Controversial director Lars Von Trier does not disappoint this year with his
Melancholia, a film sure to start a few debates.
The Cannes Film Festival 2011 is all about the glitz and glamour however and not just the controversial and nothing says Hollywood glamour more than the arrival of Johnny Depp and cast of the latest
Pirates and the Caribbean film. Many will find their
St Tropez villa rental ideally located to enjoy both the festival and the after parties that take place in both Cannes and St Tropez.

Other notable names set to walk the red carpet are Angelina Jolie accompanying her husband Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, French music and film royalty Charlotte Gainsborough and Jean Paul Belmondo. All of whom are regular visitors to the South of France and often
rent a villa in Saint Tropez to be in the heart of the action.
Those in the know are quietly optimistic about this year’s festival and the quality of film being promised. On paper there is a lot to be excited about but we’ll have to wait till the 22nd of May before deciding if our expectations were met.
