Cultural Delights of Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez is synonymous with sea, sun and sophistication – and is considered amongst the most fashionable places to visit in the South of France during the summer months.

Situated in the western part of the French Riviera, just over 100km for Nice Cote d’Azur airport and a 20 minute ride in a helicopter from Nice to Saint-Tropez, the charming town is built around a picturesque port which attracts some of the world’s most luxurious yachts. Some find it very easy to spend a whole afternoon watching the super yachts as they come into anchor from their St Tropez villa rental with a class of wine in hand.

Venture away from the old port and you will find yourself in another world – of narrow, cobbled streets and shady squares where elderly men play pétanque. And hidden in these streets are row up row of exclusive boutiques and renowned restaurants, which make the perfect resting place during a day exploring the area.

Less well known but equally worthy of a visit during your stay in a St Tropez villa rental is the town’s collection of first-class museums.

One of the highlights of any cultural sejour in the South of France should surely be the Annonciade Museum, which is also known as the Art Museum of Saint Tropez. Here you will find some of the greatest masters of modern times, including Bonnard, Braque, Derain, Maillol, Matisse, Seurat, Signac, Utrillo and Van Dongen. The museum, located in a former church on Place Georges Grammont, will this summer be exhibiting paintings by the French artist, Georges Rouault.

Other note-worthy art galleries in Saint-Tropez include the Gallery Henrie Sie, where many impressionist paintings of Provence are exhibited, and the Céramique 1900, a modern art deco museum where you can find a large choice of ceramics to buy. Works include pottery by Picasso, Massier and Cazaux.

Also recommended for those that rent a villa in Saint Tropez is the Naval Museum, which is housed in the very impressive 16th century Citadel that dominates the port. The Citadel is a hexagonal-shaped building that was first built as a fortress to protect the town. It is now home to a collection of artefacts that recall the maritime history of the area, when it was a prime strategic post.

Finally, there is the unusual – but outstanding – Butterfly Museum which is more commonly known as the Maison des Papillons. Here you will find scores of preserved butterflies on display in a converted house on Rue Etienne Berny. The Maison des Papillons also has its own boutique where you can buy jewellery which often features motifs of butterflies and moths.

Who Will Come Out On Top at the Year’s Cannes Film Festival 2011?

From the widely agreed flop of the Da Vinci Code in 2006 to the more recent success of Pixar’s UP, the opening slot in the Cannes Film Festival itinerary has had its up’s and downs, no pun intended. The question on the lips of those anticipating the start of the Cannes Film Festival 2011 is who will the selectors give the nod to this year?

Will it be a case of national pride that sees Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris pip the rest to open the Festival? A film that sees France’s very own first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy appear, if only briefly.

In recent years Allen’s offerings to the public have been hit and miss. From the highs of his top grossing film, Vicky Christina Barcelona to the lows with the critical reviews of Cassandra’s Dream and Whatever Works. All this feels a long way from Allen’s great works such as Annie Hall, Manhattan and Match Point. Critics are however optimistic with the new film which stars Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard and Michael Sheen.

Of the British contingent, Scottish born Lynne Ramsey is hotly tipped to be amongst the mix closing in for the coveted Palm d’Or award. Her adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s bestselling novel We Need to Talk about Kevin is being eagerly anticipated by film enthusiasts.

Other notable filmmakers vying for the top accolade are Padro Almodover with The Skin I Live In. Nicolas Winding Refn, the Dardenne brothers and Terrence Malick with his film The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn playing father and son.

Controversial director Lars Von Trier does not disappoint this year with his Melancholia, a film sure to start a few debates.

The Cannes Film Festival 2011 is all about the glitz and glamour however and not just the controversial and nothing says Hollywood glamour more than the arrival of Johnny Depp and cast of the latest Pirates and the Caribbean film. Many will find their St Tropez villa rental ideally located to enjoy both the festival and the after parties that take place in both Cannes and St Tropez.

Other notable names set to walk the red carpet are Angelina Jolie accompanying her husband Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, French music and film royalty Charlotte Gainsborough and Jean Paul Belmondo. All of whom are regular visitors to the South of France and often rent a villa in Saint Tropez to be in the heart of the action.

Those in the know are quietly optimistic about this year’s festival and the quality of film being promised. On paper there is a lot to be excited about but we’ll have to wait till the 22nd of May before deciding if our expectations were met.

The Best Beaches of Saint-Tropez

The entire Cote d’Azur is famous for its beautiful coastline, but many of the region’s best beaches are without doubt found nestled into the jagged shore near Saint-Tropez.

The main beach of Saint-Tropez – and arguably the best known in France - is Pampelonne Beach, which actually falls in the commune of Ramatuelle. Here, over a distance of six kilometres and 67 hectares, are a staggering 27 private and public beaches that draws thousands of holiday makers keen to rent a villa in Saint Tropez every year.

There is something here for everyone: trendy clubs frequented by resident DJs playing the hippest tunes, exclusive restaurants serving the best seafood and champagne, and beaches designated for families. Some of the public beaches are also reserves for nudists, although we do advise you wear clothes during the commute from your St Tropez villa rental to the beach.

There are also a great number of opportunities here to try your hand at watersports, from windsurfing and waterskiing to kayaking and sailing.

The nearest beach to the picturesque port of Saint-Tropez is Plage des Graniers, a small beach right under the citadel of Saint-Tropez. Another local beach is la Pinede, and Pearl Beach, home to the famous fish soup restaurant La Bouillabaisse. Dine at this acclaimed restaurant and then be home before dark after a short troll to your St Tropez villa rental.

For those that prefer to stay away from the masses, there is the stunning Plage de l’Escalet, a small beach hidden away to the west of Pampelonne. Situated on the south side of Cap Camarat, the small half-sand, half-pebble beach attracts a loyal clientele. Although it might seem a long way to go to sit on just another pebbly beach, the views from this corner of France are second-to-none and it is well worth the journey.

Despite its feeling of remoteness, the beach has all the required facilities such as toilets, showers and a lifeguard. There are also a couple of snack bars where you can buy food and drink. Alternatively, book a table for lunch at one of Saint-Tropez’s first class restaurants to relax and let the world pass you by for a few hours.

New Ownership for Tiki Club

Tiki Club on Pampelonne Beach has changed ownership this year. Rumble Romagnoli and his team who had brought Saint Tropez sunshine to the Tiki Club the old Tiki Pub has now left for the mountains. Why? Many reasons - but mainly family reasons and a bit of an indifference with the owner of Kon Tiki Holiday Resort on Pampelonne.

Tiki Club has become more famous over the past three years with Tropezian djs on the beach and happy hours on cocktails from 1600 to 1800. Now Fabrice who has come over from Hossegor will be looking after the Tiki Club beach restarant in between Club 55 Pampelonne and Tiki Beach in front of the Kon Tiki Resort.

Rumble Matthew Hugo Alez Joroon Rudy Max wish Fabrice and their beach well.
